Most of us recognise physical and personality traits we inherit from our parents, but are good teeth genetic and are you right to blame your dad for your crooked front tooth?

According to dental experts, there are genetic implications for the teeth; often, the shape and alignment of the teeth are inherited from the parents; you may notice that your teeth are a similar shape to your mum’s or you have the same bite as your dad. Problems such as crooked and misaligned teeth tend to be genetic, but there are many other factors, which can influence both the look and health of your smile.

Bad habits

Bad habits play a huge role in the appearance of your teeth and your oral health and this applies to habits during childhood and your adult years. During childhood, drinking from a bottle, sucking your thumb and using a dummy can all affect the alignment and positioning of your teeth, which may become worse as you get older and your adult teeth start to erupt. Orthodontic problems are very common in young people and this may be due to genetics or the fact that many children use dummies and bottles for longer than recommended.

When it comes to your oral health, there is some evidence to suggest that you may be more prone to gum disease or cavities if your parents have poor oral health; however, this is largely due to factors including your oral hygiene regime and your diet. The main causes of gum disease and tooth decay are poor oral hygiene and a diet that contains a lot of sugar. Sugary foods and drinks cause bacteria in the mouth to produce harmful plaque acids, which attack the tooth enamel, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Neglecting oral hygiene causes bacteria to build-up, producing plaque, which clings to the surfaces of the teeth and gum line; if plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens and turns into tartar, a brown substance, which cannot be removed by brushing.

Preventing oral health problems

If you want a healthy, bright smile, you need to follow some very simple rules. Brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste for at least 2 minutes each time, floss on a regular basis and see your dentist every 6 months for a check-up. Keep an eye on your diet, avoid snacking on sugary foods between meals and restrict your daily sugar intake; try to stick to water and milk and wait at least one hour after eating to brush your teeth, as the tooth enamel is weakened temporarily after eating.

Treatments for genetic problems

There are several treatment options available to patients who have orthodontic problems, such as crooked and crowded teeth, problems with the bite and spaces between the teeth. Treatment options include traditional fixed braces, clear braces and removable orthodontic appliances. Orthodontists usually recommend orthodontic treatment for teenagers because issues tend to get worse over time and it is best to address them as early as possible. Revolutionary advances mean that new treatment options now include invisible braces.

Dental veneers are a very popular treatment and it’s no surprise, as they produce truly amazing results.

What are veneers?

They are ultra-thin, tooth-shaped pieces of laminated ceramic material (usually porcelain), which are applied over the natural teeth to produce a perfect smile. Veneers are often compared to false nails, as they are placed over the top of the teeth in the same way as false nails are applied over the nails.

Why should I choose veneers?

If you long for a radiant, flawless smile, this may be the answer. The treatment is very popular with actresses, models and reality television stars and in the last decade they have become a must-have accessory. This is a sure-fire way of transforming your smile and it is ideal for people who have the following cosmetic flaws:

Chipped teeth

Discoloured or stained teeth

Worn teeth

Spaces between the teeth

Veneers are shaped and coloured to look like natural teeth and you can choose from a range of different styles depending on whether you want a natural look or a more glamorous finish.

What does treatment involve?

Before you have treatment you will be advised to have a consultation with your dentist. Your dentist will explain how the treatment works and what it entails and examine your mouth. They will also discuss your treatment expectations with you and ask you about the kind of look you would like. You will be encouraged to get involved in designing your new smile and once you have decided that you want to go ahead with treatment, your dentist will prepare your teeth.

The preparation stage is necessary to make room (in the case of some types of veneer, such as Lumineers, no preparation may be required because the veneers are so thin). Preparing the teeth involves trimming away very thin layers of the tooth structure. Your teeth will be anaesthetised to prevent any pain.

When the teeth have been prepared, your dentist will create impressions, which will be sent to the laboratory so that your bespoke dental veneers can be fabricated to fit perfectly. Once they are read, your dentist will fit them over your natural teeth, check that you are happy with your new smile and then fix them firmly to your teeth.

There are two forms of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 2 diabetes is much more common and it is heavily linked to lifestyle factors, while type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, which many people are born with and has nothing to do with their diet or lifestyle. Diabetes affects the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels.

What causes type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to control blood sugar levels as a result of not producing enough insulin (a hormone, which is produced by the pancreas and is responsible for controlling blood glucose levels) or the cells not responding to insulin.

Many cases of type 2 diabetes are associated with lifestyle factors and risk factors include:

being overweight or obese (having a BMI of more than 25 or 30 respectively)

having family history of diabetes

having a poor diet

age: the risk increases with age

heritage: people with Middle Eastern, African-Caribbean or South Asian heritage are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes

What are the signs and symptoms?

Diabetes is a very serious condition, which requires close monitoring and effective management; it is important that patients who think they may have diabetes see their doctor so that the condition can be diagnosed and appropriate treatment arranged as early as possible.

Symptoms to look out for include:

feeling thirsty on a regular basis

going to the toilet frequently to urinate, especially at night

weight loss and loss of muscle mass

feeling tired and lethargic

Often, symptoms are very mild and they may be associated with other health problems; for this reason, many people wait to see a doctor and the figures for the number of people affected by diabetes may actually be much higher due to the fact that people are undiagnosed.

Additional symptoms may also include itchiness around the genitals, cramps, thrush and blurred vision.

What happens if diabetes is not controlled?

If diabetes is not managed properly it can be very serious; without the right treatment, blood sugar levels will be unstable and this can cause hyperglycaemia, which occurs when blood sugar levels are too high. Symptoms of hyperglycaemia include dizziness, blurred vision, feeling drowsy, urinating frequently and dry mouth. Complications of diabetes include dental health problems, foot problems and issues related to vision.

When it comes to renting a property, you need to take a few things into consideration. If you end up making a bad decision there’s not much you can do about it, for a few months at least! So if you’re thinking of renting accommodation, here are a few things to consider:

Who: Who are you living with? Alone, with your partner or in a group? It’s important to decide this long before anything else, because securing a property is made much more difficult when you can’t tell the landlord how many will be definitely staying. While some landlords are easygoing about how many stay (those who charge by room are usually not fussed) but many landlords agree to a fixed price. For example, if four people want to flat-share as a group of 5, the landlord may well expect 5 people’s rent every month. You don’t want to have to fork out for more than you should, so make sure you decide who you’re living with, and stick to your decision.

Where: In considering where to live, you need to think locally and generally. Many factors come into this decision – money, lifestyle and convenience. If your funds are a bit low, finding a city with low rent prices like Bradford might be the choice for you. If you are a light sleeper, it might be wise to avoid living in the city centre – the noise and light pollution will be incessant. For that reason it might be better to live on the edge of a city or in a smaller town.

How: Think about how you’re going to find your property. There’s the newspaper if you’re moving within the same city, and recommendations from friends are always valuable. You could apply online, but this is generally not recommended as you need to see your property in order to decide if you want to live there. The other option of course, is to visit your local letting agents. My local one was the leading letting agents for property rental in Erdington (where I live) and they helped me out, from finding a property all the way to rental.

I’m now happily situated in my new abode because I considered all of these factors. If you check off this list as you go, you’re sure to find the perfect property for you, whether it be a flat, chalet or longboat!

Erectile dysfunction is an uncomfortable subject of discussion for many men, yet it is actually very common. Many men with erectile dysfunction may feel embarrassed and ashamed and presume they are one of very few men affected; however, this is completely wrong, as erectile dysfunction affects many men, especially older men.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction used to be known as impotence; it occurs when a man has difficulty getting and maintaining an erection. Erectile dysfunction prevents men from having sexual intercourse and it can also have implications for their confidence, mental wellbeing and self-esteem.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

There are many possible causes of erectile dysfunction, including physical and psychological causes. In older men, the most common cause is restricted blood flow around the body, which is often associated with cardiovascular problems. Other causes include underlying health conditions, physical abnormalities of the penis and psychological factors, including depression, anxiety and stress.

What can be done?

There are various treatment options from impotence doctors for erectile dysfunction; often, a doctor will recommend lifestyle changes before suggesting a formal treatment, which may include increasing the amount of exercise you do, eating a healthy, balanced diet and cutting down on drinking and smoking.

If your doctor thinks that erectile dysfunction could be linked to an underlying medical condition, this will be treated as a priority; likewise, if you are taking medication, which may be contributing to erectile dysfunction, your doctor may prescribe an alternative drug.

Treatment options include medication to improve blood flow to the penis, vacuum pumps, surgery (in rare cases) and psychological therapies, including sex therapy, couple’s counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy.

It is important to remember that your doctor will have seen hundreds of men with erectile dysfunction and there is nothing to embarrassed or ashamed about; it is also worth noting that treatment is successful in the vast majority of cases.

Finding and sustaining a suitable weight is accomplished with good diet, nutrition and exercise. Herre we offer information on unhealthy weights, weight loss and medical aid, and advice on improving your weight and health.

Overweight

Being an overweight or obese adult is increasingly common due to changes in lifestyles and working habits, and this is reflected in the coverage of medical aid providers. Putting weight on occurs when more energy, in the form of calories from food and drink, is taken in than you use through activity and exercise. In addition to lack of exercise, smoking or a family history of obesity can also increase your risk. Some people have a medical reason for being overweight, though this accounts for less than 1 in 100 cases.

Associated Risks

Many serious health problems are often developed by overweight or obese people, conditions which may require the assistance of medical insurance. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart attack, heart disease, stroke, and certain forms of cancer. Possible long-term irritations include difficulty with breathing or sleeping, in addition to increased risk of arthritis. Overweight women can have trouble becoming pregnant or suffer from problems during pregnancy, while an overweight man’s fertility may be adversely affected.

Weight loss surgery and Medical Insurance

Even if you do have medical insurance it is not absolute that your treatment would be covered. Even if it is possible the process can take time to prove the treatment is really needed and so it is essential to understand your South African medical aid to be sure what it will and, perhaps most importantly, won’t cover. Medical insurance is important for a healthy future but you must know what it includes.

Associated Risks

Being underweight for extensive periods can put you at greater risk from heart damage, osteoporosis, and more. Underweight women may suffer from amenorrhoea (lack of menstrual bleeding) or find it difficult to become pregnant, while underweight men can develop sperm disorders.

Body Mass Index

You can reduce the risk of health problems by maintaining a proper diet and reaching a healthy weight. The body mass index is the primary figure used to calculate whether an adult is at a healthy weight or not. Using your specific height and weight, the BMI provides a decent indication of your amount of body fat. However, the BMI is limited because it does not account for particularly muscular people, nor those with a lot of body fat but little muscle (who may fall within the healthy range). In general, people who carry weight around their middles are more at risk of bad health.

When people think of Botox they usually associate it with celebrities who are looking for that elusive youth serum.

While Botox is used to remove unwanted lines on the face, researchers are now realising there are a number of benefits of Botox.

For instance, a 15 year old girl was given Botox by medical practitioners to help unlock her muscles which were affected by a stroke.

Mel Strzebrakowska unfortunately succumbed to this debilitating disorder while celebrating her father’s birthday. She told reporters that she was unaware of anything the day it happened except for waking up and finding herself in the intensive care unit at her local hospital.

She told reporters: “I tried to scramble out of bed, but my legs collapsed, and my right hand wouldn’t work either.”

Mel added: “I didn’t know what was wrong. Then the doctors told me I’d had a stroke. I couldn’t take it in. I was so young. I couldn’t believe it had happened to me.”

Having a stroke at such a tender age is rare but not unknown. However irrespective of age one the hallmarks of the condition is the muscles on one side of the body tend to be locked with the patient unable to use them. The facial muscles are also affected often given the appearance of the mouth dropping on one side.

In Mel Strzebrakowska’s case the stroke will have occurred on the left hand side of the brain as her speech was also affected.

What’s more, post stroke muscle stiffness affects around 30% of sufferers, and while drugs are used to help, they often leave side effects.

Consequently, it was this fact in mind that medical practitioners started to think of other methods of treatment. Hence Botox was started to be used to help relax the muscles.

Mel has been having Botox therapy for the past 4 years now which has helped her enormously, done so by a Botox training course past student.

It should be pointed out however that while Botox is a very useful product that helps both stroke victims like Mel Strzebrakowska and those seeking cosmetic therapy, the treatments in both cases should only be carried out by qualified practitioners who have been on Botox training course.

Botox is a derivative of a bacterium and should only be administered by people who know what they are doing.

In earlier times, however, as both the business and IT agendas became almost interchangeable, technology has transformed into a driving force for insurance agencies communicating with clients who are continuously demanding and ever-increasing in impatience. This client’s own fondness with technology has resulted in the emergence of an entirely new anticipation and demand from insurance agencies. In fact, as of today, clients in the UK insurance market are expecting and demanding the ability to manage business transactions when, where and how they desire it With this increasing demand, 2012 has created different technology trends for the UK insurance industry. Here are the top 5 technology trends you should know about.

First, data as a platform, allocated wherever it is required. Insurance is an industry already flooded by information, yet the levels of data are anticipated to develop in exponential amounts, from a continuously escalating range of sources. Insurance firms will have to learn and master the large volumes of information that they have, both from external and internal sources, to be able to enhance all their operations, customer support services and generate products around the client and comply with developing regulatory requirements including Solvency II.

Second, analytics at the core of accomplishing improved client insight and more efficient enterprise processes. The insights that speculative researchers and experts can produce are especially vital to answer altering client behavior, yet remain more dynamic when they are incorporated into business processes. Researchers and experts can enhance advertising and allocation activities through assisting in determining the correct products for the right clients at the right time.

Third, cloud computing producing greater values up the business via applications and utilities Cloud computing systems has yet to make similar effects in the insurance industry as it already has in several other markets. This is large due to the fact that a lot of insurance firms are placed accountable with legacy networks that cannot be easily hauled into the Cloud system.

Fourth, service-centered rather than server-centered framework to produce versatile highly-responsive and speedy business structures and features Adamant and expensive legacy systems shape a primary barrier that bypasses insurance agencies from moving to more dexterous and responsive networks and business operations.

Fifth, social media and digital advertising to develop company brand awareness and online presence. The potential enterprise value for insurance agencies in such social media outlets as blog sites and social networking sites are developing for sales, brand growth and staffing. While having good exposure and visibility in major social networking sites are becoming increasingly crucial, latest, improved and interactive websites still prove to be the key to any online source.

Relationships play an important role in most people’s lives. There are many different kinds of relationships and the success or failure of a relationship can have serious implications for your happiness and wellbeing. Examples of important relationships include relationships with partners, husbands or wives, relationships with friends, relationships with family relationships and relationships with work colleagues.

Couples

Relationships can make or break people. There is no better feeling in the world than spending time and forming a strong relationship with somebody that you are very fond of. However, not all relationships have a happy ending and many people suffer stress and distress as a result of their relationship with their partner. Relationship experts have different approaches when it comes to giving advice but the general consensus seems to be that successful relationships depend on trust, common moral and family values, common interests and a mutual desire to be together.

The nature of relationships between couples has changed in recent years. Women have become more equal and a large proportion of women now have a full-time job, divorce has become more widely accepted and fewer couples are getting married, choosing instead to cohabit.

Relationships are often challenging. Not many people have a relationship that doesn’t have its downs as well as its ups but this does not mean that a relationship does not work. Relationship experts offer the following advice to keep your relationship on track:

make time for each other

be honest and open; if there is a problem, tackle it head-on but take care to be sensitive and tactful

spend time together doing things that you enjoy

give each other space

try not to hold grudges

talk to each other; if you have worries or concerns do not expect your partner to read your mind, talk to them instead and this may help you to resolve the issue

be spontaneous

Family life

Family life is really important but it can be difficult to spend quality time together as people’s lifestyles demand that they spend long hours working and this can limit the time available for family bonding. Studies show that children who grow up in a stable, happy family environment are more likely to be successful in the future and enjoy happy stable relationships with their partners. Try to make time for your family; if you have been working more than usual, take time off and devote your time to your partner and your children; get involved in fun activities, go away or simply spend time together at home.

Relationships at work

Your relationships at work can make the difference between whether you enjoy work or you dread the thought of the start of the new working week. If you get on with the people around you, you are more likely to enjoy your work and this may improve your performance at work. If you do not get on with the people around you or you feel that your efforts are not recognised, this can affect the way you feel at work and it may also have a negative impact on your self-esteem. If you are having problems with colleagues at work, try to talk to the appropriate people and resolve the problem; if you leave it, it will probably get worse.

Entertainment is an umbrella term, which is used to describe many different activities and methods that are used to entertain people. Entertainment may involve many different activities, from going to the theatre to going to a concert or watching a film at home. Entertainment is designed to provide an enjoyable distraction to everyday life.

Modern entertainment

Entertainment is increasingly passive, meaning that people take a back seat and let somebody else entertain them. The most popular forms of entertainment include:

watching films, either at home or at the cinema

watching plays or shows

going to concerts

watching television

watching comedy – either watching a stand-up show or a funny programme or film

listening to music

playing games

watching sports

More active forms of entertainment, such as playing sports, are usually regarded as recreational activities or hobbies, although some people would class them as form of entertainment. Modern entertainment revolves around celebrity; celebrity culture has become increasingly prevalent over the last decade and many people now follow celebrities and their lifestyles on television, in the press and on social media websites.

Why is entertainment important?

Entertainment is important to most people because they like to have time out from work and enjoy themselves, especially in the evenings after a long day at work. Entertainment can help to reduce stress and anxiety and create a more positive mood. Many people find they are in a much better mood when they can wind down and relax in front of a film or the television in the evenings, rather than having to work late.

In many cases, entertainment also brings people together. You can spend time with family and friends and enjoy a film, go to a football match or catch a musical and the aim of the game is to have as much fun as possible. Entertainment has become an increasingly integral part of the modern lifestyle, as people spend longer at work and suffer from work-related stress. Entertainment provides an enjoyable diversion to the routine of daily life.
